A Historic Crossing

On August 2, 2019, President Laurentino Cortizo and Panama Canal Administrator Jorge Quijano officially unveiled the Atlantic Bridge (Puente Atlántico), the first-ever crossing of the Panama Canal on the Caribbean side. Hundreds of vehicles made the ceremonial first crossing that afternoon, marking the end of decades of dependence on ferry services to get across the canal near Colón.

Engineering on a World-Record Scale

Located approximately three kilometers north of the Gatun Locks, the Atlantic Bridge is a cable-stayed structure stretching 1,050 meters in total length. Its central span of 530 meters of concrete deck set a world record for a cable-stayed bridge at the time of completion. Two soaring towers rise over 210 meters above the waterline, and the deck sits 75 meters above sea level — high enough to allow the largest vessels in the world to pass beneath on their way through the expanded canal.

Built by VINCI Construction

The Panama Canal Authority awarded the construction contract to French firm VINCI Construction at a cost of approximately $366 million. The project took several years to complete and required innovative engineering solutions to work around active canal operations while building over one of the busiest waterways on the planet.

Why It Matters for Colón and the Caribbean Coast

Before the Atlantic Bridge, crossing the canal on the Caribbean side meant waiting for ferry service — a process that could take hours and was entirely dependent on lock operations.
