A Game-Changer for Panama West

La Chorrera, one of Panama's fastest-growing districts, has reached a major infrastructure milestone. As part of the Corredor de las Playas project, a 1.7-kilometer elevated viaduct now spans the area, along with a new roundabout-style interchange at the entrance to the city center. These projects are reshaping how tens of thousands of daily commuters move between Panama West and the capital.

The Viaduct by the Numbers

The La Chorrera viaduct is an impressive feat of engineering. Spanning 41 sections with an average length of 43 meters each, the structure is 26.50 meters wide and accommodates six lanes of traffic — three heading inland and three toward Panama City. Built using a specialized winged-trolley construction method used for the first time in Panama, the viaduct was designed to minimize disruption to traffic below while maintaining high safety standards for workers.

The Interchange

Complementing the viaduct is a new roundabout interchange at La Chorrera's urban core. Featuring three lanes and eight ramps providing access to all surrounding sectors, the interchange eliminates the notorious bottleneck that had plagued commuters for years. Together with the viaduct, it creates a seamless flow from the Pan-American Highway into the heart of La Chorrera.

Part of a Bigger Picture

These improvements are part of the broader Corredor de las Playas initiative, which is widening roughly 20 kilometers of the Pan-American Highway from four to six lanes between El Espino in La Chorrera and Sajalices in Chame. The corridor also includes bridge rehabilitation and additional overpasses, with the goal of dramatically improving access to Panama's popular Pacific beach communities.
